Grants & Funding Watch: Two Programs Open Right Now for Victorian Farmers
Victorian Primary Producer Bushfire Recovery Grants: Up to $75,000, Closing 21 October 2026
If your property was affected by the Victorian bushfires that started on 7 January 2026, the Victorian Primary Producer Bushfire Recovery Grants program is open right now through Rural Finance, and closes at 4:00pm on 21 October 2026 (AEDT). It's a two-tier program: Tier 1 offers up to $10,000 and only requires evidence of the damage itself — no proof of payment needed at this stage — while Tier 2 offers a further amount up to a combined total of $65,000 for producers who can provide full evidence of payment for their recovery expenses.
The grant covers clean-up and reinstatement of the primary production enterprise, which Rural Finance's guidelines list as including safety inspections, equipment hire or purchase, debris removal, and livestock disposal costs. There's no dollar-for-dollar co-contribution required, which makes this a more accessible program than most on-farm infrastructure grants. Eligibility is limited to primary producers with direct damage in the designated local government areas, so it's worth checking the specific LGA list on Rural Finance's site rather than assuming based on region alone.
To apply, you'll need photo ID, proof of your property location, evidence of income, and documentation showing the direct impact of the bushfire on your enterprise — all submitted online through the SmartyGrants application portal. If you're at all unsure whether your situation qualifies, Rural Finance's government services line (1800 260 425, governmentservices@ruralfinance.com.au) can talk you through it before you start the paperwork.
If you were affected by these fires and haven't applied yet because you assumed the window had closed or the process would be too onerous, it's worth a second look — the tiered structure means you can get Tier 1 support moving with just evidence of damage, then come back for Tier 2 once you've got your payment records together.
Look Over The Farm Gate: $1,500–$5,000 for Community Mental Health Events, Closing 30 September 2026
The second program worth acting on now is Look Over The Farm Gate, run through Western District Health Service's Farmer Health initiative. It funds community-led events and programs that promote mental health in agriculture — particularly relevant given the tough, unpredictable seasons Victorian farmers have been dealing with (see this batch's farming news roundup for more on that). Grants range from $1,500 to $5,000 per event.
Eligibility is broader than you might expect: you don't need to be a farmer yourself to apply. According to business.gov.au, applicants can be members of the agricultural industry or farming community, or organisations that demonstrate a current connection to local farming communities — that covers rural supply and service businesses, community support groups, and healthcare providers as well as farmers and industry groups directly.
Applications close Wednesday, 30 September 2026 — but the program's own guidance notes that applications may close earlier if the round is fully subscribed, so this isn't one to leave until the last week. Full details and the application process are on the Farmer Health website, or you can call the program directly on (03) 5551 8533.
If your farm, local landcare group, or even your regional show society has been kicking around an idea for a field day, a social event, or a wellbeing workshop aimed at the farming community, this is a genuinely accessible pool of funding to make it happen — and mental health support that comes from a shared paddock walk or a shed lunch often lands better than a formal program ever could.
Also Still Open: Farm Drought Support Grants
Worth a quick mention since it's still live: the Farm Drought Support Grants covered in an earlier batch of these posts remain open, offering up to $5,000 statewide (or $10,000 in designated south-west Victoria areas) for water infrastructure, stock containment, storage and pasture re-establishment costs. That program closes 30 September 2026 or when funding is fully allocated, whichever comes first — full details are on Agriculture Victoria's site.
